Happy Halloween, and welcome to the last day of our 30-Day Horror Challenge! It was a fun project to undertake, but now it’s ending. Speaking of ending, today’s topic is “The best horror film ending.”
Once more I’m going to add a list of “Runners-Up” to this because there’s a lot of solid possibilities to choose from that shouldn’t be overlooked…

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” She escapes, covered in blood, gets in the truck and Leatherface stands in the road swinging his saw, pissed that this now-forever-batshit lady got away. The evil wasn’t destroyed in the end, one lucky person just got away.
“Midsommar.” The last scene is the scene image everyone will remember. The crown of flowers around her head, the progression of emotions on her face, it’s good stuff.
“Hereditary.” Have you ever seen such a bat shit ending??

“Sleepaway Camp.” Another horror that is defined by it’s ending scene. The clunky early practical effects used to make this happen only serve to make it CREEPIER!
“Rosemary’s Baby.” The baby finally appears, the coven is uncovered, and Rosemary is in it now, whether she likes it or not.
“Creep.” I almost didn’t think he was going to do it!
“The Shining.” Frozen, psycho-faced Jack dead in the hedge maze. Big “Whoah!” moment.

Winner:
“Carrie.”
You probably hate my choice, or are thinking “Better than ‘The Descent?’ Better than ‘Saw?’ Better than ‘Blair Witch?'”
Choice is subjective. I just really was bowled-over when I first saw that movie. That moment of apex, the look on Carrie’s face as she exacts her revenge and slowly walks out, only to kill Mom and burn down the house. You’re still in your “Wow” mindset, the blood in your veins still feeling icy as the soft-lensed dream sequence comes on screen and pulls you right back into it. Nightmare on Elm Street style.
This brings OkGoreberfest 2025 to a close. Come visit every Saturday for the next 11 months, Mido and I will continue with our regular off-season snotty reviews every week, until next OkGoreberfest!
