Can’t believe I never heard of this one. Low-budget wonder, it’s a coming-of-age story about a kid who idolizes his psycho brother who gives his parents sass and keeps severed heads in a bowling bag in his closet. It starts like a bizarre coming-of-age film that turns into a horror movie halfway through… even though it begins with a scene involving the main character admiring a severed head in his brother’s closet, talking matter-of-factly about his brother’s hobby. I wasn’t expecting much, yet I really dig this one.
It’s low budget and has a bit of a retro feel that way. Remember The Wonder Years? That late 80’s TV series back when we had less choices because there was no streaming and the basic cable channels were pretty basic. Now imagine that Kevin’s brother Wayne got naked and chopped people into little bitty pieces parts. Yeah, it’s that much better than The Wonder Years.
I’m joking, people liked The Wonder Years, it was heart warming and family-friendly and tapped into our collective childhoods… even though Wayne didn’t get naked and chop people up.
This sucker was banned in Australia, where they don’t like it when Wayne gets naked and chops people up. Prudes. The UK cut out a minute and a half of footage, and I can’t imagine what footage was cut. By that I mean there is just SO much gore, the sort of people who would do some censoring only find 90 seconds of it unfit for the good people of Great Britain?

There is a sequel to this… or a prequel… a pre-sequel I guess, called Headless (which I’ll also review).
