Day 18

Posted on October 19, 2025October 6, 2025 by Kev

Welcome to Day 18 of OkGoreberfest’s 30-Day Horror Challenge! Today’s challenge would like to know “Your favorite horror from the 1980s.”

Much like the 1950’s, the 1980’s had a significant boom in horror interest. The release of movies like “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th,” “The Howling” and “Poltergeist,” as well as an explosion of novels from authors like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub and Clive Barker influenced a new Renaissance in horror entertainment. It also paved the way for movie producers to beat the hell out of horror movies by franchising them until they were an impotent shell of their original selves.

There are several 80’s horrors I could choose from for the top choice, but since several of those were/ will be featured during this fest of ours, I’m going to go with “American Werewolf in London.”

…or “Creepshow.” Hmm. Nope, I’m going to stick with American Werewolf.

It’s such an easily-watchable movie from a variety of viewpoints. The story itself is really compelling. The humor is genuinely funny, and the horrors will make you grip the blanket on your lap while watching this on the couch.

…don’t grip your cat while watching it, of course. Your cat doesn’t want to be clutched at like that, and I don’t know about YOURS but mine will probably try to kick my ass. Mido doesn’t mess around.

My second choice (given the removal of three others that show up elsewhere on this website this month) gottsta be Creepshow, though. What a friggin’ fun movie that one is! What an infinitely quotable movie, too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve referred to something as “Meteor Shit” or drunkenly ranted “Just call me Billie, everyone does!”

New reviews are posted periodically on Saturdays, and every day throughout October
